Regular Door and Window Maintenance Can Help Save Energy This Winter

In Autumn 2024 the UK Government announced changes to the Winter Fuel Payment for pensioners. Under the new rules, eligibility will be means tested and determined by access to benefits, such as pension credit.

Many individuals who were previously eligible may no longer qualify under the new rules. This could lead to increased financial strain during the winter months, particularly for those living within a tight budget.

However, there are things you can do to help improve the energy efficiency of your home via good upkeep of your windows and doors. Regular inspection, maintenance and repair can all help save money on energy bills.

The most common types of materials used for doors and windows in the home today are UPVC and Aluminium. Both look great, offering good durability and thermal insulation properties. However, they can also encounter issues that affect energy efficiency if not looked after properly.

Common Issues with UPVC Doors and Windows

Poor Installation: Gaps around the frames, incorrect sizing, or a damaged frame can lead to air and moisture leakage, reducing the window or door’s energy efficiency.

Worn Weatherstripping: This is an important part of UPVC doors and windows as it secures them from draughts and moisture. However it can become flattened or damaged over time, causing leaks or cold air to enter your home.

Misalignment: Issues such as sagging and warping can all causes gaps around the edges of your doors and windows, allowing cold air to enter, and warm air to exit.

Problems with Hinges: These can become stiff if not lubricated correctly, causing problems with doors and windows not opening or closing properly. Loose hinges may also cause problems with misalignment.

How to fix these issues

Repairs to Installation: If this has been identified, then you will need to take steps to fix it. A damaged frame should be replaced and a replacement door or window installed if it was the wrong size in the first place.

Realigning the door: This can be tricky to do and usually required loosening hinge screws and applying stress vertically or laterally to the door, replacing the screws afterwards. It is probably best to let a professional help you with this. In some cases, replacing the window or door may be the best solution.

Replacing Weatherstripping: Again a fairly easy task, check for damage, then remove and install new seals as required.

Adjusting the Hinges: If the problem is with opening or closing the door, adjusting the hinges may be sufficient to correct the issue, and may also help with misalignment.

Common Issues with Aluminium Doors and Windows

Condensation: Significant temperature difference between the inside and outside of your home can cause condensation to form on the cold aluminum surface. This can lead to water droplets, mold, and mildew growth.

Corrosion: Even though resistant to rustaluminum can be affected by exposure to harsh chemicals, salt, or extreme weather conditions. Corrosion can weaken the door’s structure and lead to leaks or damage.

Sealant Failure: Over time, the sealant around the door frame can deteriorate due to exposure to weather elements or general wear and tear. A failed sealant can allow air and water to enter your home.

Misalignment: When buildings settle they can have shifts in the foundation and walls. This can lead to misalignment of the door frame causing the door to fit improperly, creating gaps around the edges and letting cold air in. The door may also be difficult to open and close smoothly.

Hardware Issues: Door hardware, such as hinges, locks, and handles, can become worn or damaged over time. This can make the door difficult to operate or even prevent it from closing properly.

How to fix these issues

Ensure proper ventilation: To prevent condensation in your home open windows and doors regularly and use gadgets like a de-humidifier to help remove excess moisture in the air. Also using double or triple glazing for windows helps to create a barrier between cold and warm air temperature extremes.

Choose high quality aluminium with a protective finish: It also helps to inspect and clean the door regularly, but avoid using abrasive materials.

Inspect the sealant regularly: This will help to identify any damage, and then you can replace the seal as necessary

Realign the Door Frame: To fix a misaligned door, you may need to adjust or reinforce it. This can be done in various wasy such as installing a door brace.

Regularly checkdoor hardware: To ensure proper opening and closing and to replace any damaged components. This will ensure your home remains snug and secure.

Proper maintenance of your doors and windows will definitely help to prevent unwanted draughts, and energy leakage which is essential to reducing energy bills. You can tackle some of the issues yourself such as regular cleaning and inspection.
